Do you remember the last time you crashed? Yes, of course, it was painful, you had deep grazes all over the place and the recovery took forever. We, at Velusta remember it too. The experience sleeping with open wounds isn’t pleasant at all and that’s why we wanted to change this.
Since the bicycle helmet became mandatory, hardly anything has been done to protect the rest of the body. This while 92% of cyclists crash every year resulting in major injuries.
Our research among 699 active cyclists has shown that in 97% of crashes results in deep grazes. Furthermore, market research has shown that of all the road rash caused by falls, 7 out of 10 are on the hip area. A survey by Dr. Piet De Moor, team physician at Trek-Segafredo, confirmed that the hip is the most common site for deep grazes after a crash.
To achieve the best solution that would eliminate recurring deep abrasions on the body from the cycling scene, much research and development was required. Not only because it was a unique project but also because of the many requirements that cycling bibshorts must meet.
At the University of Antwerp, Luka Šeparović and Jarrid Janssens, the two founders of Velusta, got to know each other during their Engineering studies. During 'The Company' classes, they worked together for 4 years on a solution to reduce abrasions in cycling. After several studies, the belief grew to work with multiple layers to protect the body. For this, the protection had to be flexible, light, but also breathable. A business case was also developed to eventually go from concept to prototype.
With the above in mind, we extensively tested different materials and patterns to come up with the best solution for the cyclist.
Unlike other brands, Velusta believes in multi-layer protection to prevent recurring deep abrasions at hip level. This because of the high impact and frictional heat that is developed during a fall in this particular region. Therefore Velusta developed innovative bibshorts with 3D Impact Protection. This protection consists of three layers, each layer having its own function to prevent abrasions.
The protection is incorporated in the two sides of the shorts at hip level. This is where most of the abrasions occur. The top layer acts as a friction-resistant second skin. The middle layer is an anti-shock layer that absorbs the impact of the fall and isolates the heat. Underneath, there is a comfort layer making everything feel very comfortable and breathable.
The protection is divided into two strips on both sides so that the free movement of the leg is preserved.
Our company is lead by two engineers with a great
passion for sports and expertise in cycling. In 2015, at the University of Antwerp, Luka Šeparović and Jarrid Janssens, the two founders of Velusta, met while studying Industrial Engineering. Luka's dream was to become an impactful entrepreneur and Jarrid's dream was to overcome the abrasions caused by cycling. During 'The Company' classes they worked together for four years on a solution to prevent bicycle abrasions.
Eventually Velusta was officially founded in 2021 from a student house in Antwerp, Flanders after a successful (international) crowdfunding via Kickstarter and brought out the world's first cycling shorts with 3D Impact Protection against deep abrasions as well as a protective cycling shirt. Within Velusta, Luka takes care of the daily management and the commercial side of the company, while Jarrid on the other hand is responsible for the development and production of Velusta's unique protective cycling clothing.
